IT'S
CRIMINAL
The second Grand Theft Auto 4 trailer has been
released, and if you're above the age of 35 and can provide written affidavits
of your mental competency, maturity, and sincerity in not using any of the
following imagery to inspire, inform or assist any sort of criminal activity,
irresponsible behavior or momentary jump in aggression levels, you can see
it yourself at www.grandtheftauto4.com.
Various sites are providing in-depth analyses
of the trailer, a noble pursuit given that it gave no solid information
whatsoever in terms of gameplay. Does it look pretty? It most assuredly does.
Car tires visibly vent air when punctured, car mirrors reflect their
surroundings, character animation's been noticeably overhauled -- although
how much of the trailer was gameplay and how much was realtime cutscene?
Only Rockstar knows, and withholding information has become something of
a cottage industry with them.
There are, however, a few moments I honestly
wasn't terribly impressed with. A few instances of rather low-res, blurry
textures really served to pull you out of a beautiful virtual world, and
I don't believe I'm alone in saying that the trees really need some work,
particularly in terms of motion. Maybe Gears of War has spoiled me for virtual
trees, but I now know you CAN make them look nice in realtime. You got four
months, Rockstar, get on it.
On the other hand, the trailer had more than
a few moments that I can't wait to see live -- the black helicopter swoopin'
over the city, Niko hanging off the back of a moving truck, the city at sunset,
the city at various other times of day, shootin' and drivin' and all sorts
of other exciting activities that I completely and totally do not advocate,
impressionable youngsters.
While it's uncertain whether the footage came
from actual gameplay, this trailer would seem to suggest you'll be able to
take cover and shoot from around corners, which I'm all in favor of! I wasn't
honestly a big fan of cover-takin' games till I played Gears of War, and
discovered, once again, that it could be pulled off correctly in a virtual
environment.
I really like Gears of War, by the way.
Anyways, what else do we know about GTA 4?
Nothin'. Absolutely nothin'. See if that stops us.
